WINNIPEG, Manitoba and MINNEAPOLIS – The Canadian government announced today that it has approved erythritol for certain food uses thereby opening another growing market for Cargill’s Eridex™ erythritol, a no calorie (0.2 Kcal/g), natural bulk sweetener made by Cargill Food & Pharma Specialties-North America. The regulatory approval was granted by Health Canada and published in the Dec. 15 edition of Canada Gazette, Part II, http://canadagazette.gc.ca.
“ Opening the Canadian market for Eridex™ erythritol means our customers can now utilize Cargill’s applications expertise to quickly formulate healthful, lower-calorie foods, beverages and confections that consumers everywhere are demanding,” said R. Creager Simpson, president of Cargill Food & Pharma Specialties-North America.
The Canadian government approved six food uses of erythritol. Health Canada established use levels for erythritol in low- or reduced-calorie beverages, dietetic cookies, soft candies (including chocolate), hard candies, chewing gum and as a tabletop sweetener. In addition to the Canadian approval, erythritol has been approved for food uses in over a dozen countries, including Japan, Australia, the United States and Mexico.
“With Canadian government approval, food, beverage and candy manufacturers in North America now enjoy a common regulatory status for this innovative, low calorie bulk sweetener,” Ron Perko, Cargill’s polyol business development manager, said. “Cargill is already working to expand the Canadian list of approved uses of erythritol to products such as breakfast cereals, baked goods, bars, salty snacks and salad dressings among other uses,” Perko added. Eridex™ erythritol is the ideal all-natural, non-caloric (0.2 Kcal/g) bulk sweetener. “The Canadian approval is significant because there is growing demand for healthy, reduced calorie, and reduced sugar products across North America. Cargill’s Eridex™ erythritol offers the added bonus that it is tooth friendly (non-cariogenic) and does not contribute to an increase in blood sugar levels upon consumption,” said Perko.
