New pharmaceutical ingredient gets a monograph in the European Pharmacopoeia

Erythritol, a new ingredient for the pharmaceutical industry, is now described in a monograph of the European Pharmacopoeia. The monograph has been officially approved during the 111th session of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission. The final text will be published in the Supplement 4.3 of Ph. Eur. 4th edition, but it is already available upon request.

Cerestar, one of the world's leading producers of starch and starch derived products, is re-affirming its commitment to serving the pharmaceutical industry by launching this multi-functional new excipient controlled according to the highest quality standards. Erythritol is already listed in the DMF under the number 15203.

Cerestar's erythritol - branded C* Eridex - is a natural non-caloric polyol present at low levels in many fruits and fermented foods. It does not promote tooth decay, is suitable for diabetics, and provides excellent sensorial benefits. The very high digestive tolerance exceeds that of lactose because of rapid and easy absorption in the small intestine.

The functional properties of C*Eridex combine a very low hygroscopicity with a strong cooling effect. The sweetness is comparable to sucrose while being inert toward most active ingredients and very stable during processing and storage. C*Eridex offers advantages in as many applications as granulated powders, tabletting, lozenges, medicated chewing gums and liquid oral application forms.
