Cerestar's C*Eridex (Erythritol) receives FDA's GRAS notification for broader use

FDA's Director of the Center of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Dr. Allan Rulis, has issued a no-objection letter on September 11, confirming that the FDA does not question the basis of Cerestar's GRAS determination of erythritol's expanded use list.

Since March 1997, erythritol has GRAS status for use as a sweetener in a wide range of applications.  Due to an increased interest in this compound, this GRAS use list was expanded in May 2000.  Today's GRAS notification by the FDA reaffirms the safety of erythritol and its wide interest in the food and beverage industry.

C*Eridex, Cerestar's erythritol brand, is an all-natural non-caloric bulk sweetener, a four-carbon sugar alcohol produced from starch by a traditional fermentation process.  Not only is C*Eridex toothfriendly and suitable for diabetic like other polyols, it also provides other unique nutritional and health benefits. C*Eridex is non caloric (<0.2 kcal/g) and has an excellent digestive tolerance.

Additionally, C*Eridex has functional properties, which makes it ideal for use in various food and drink applications.

C*Eridex has a very clean sweet taste and a sweetness potency 60 to 70% that of sucrose. When combined with intense sweeteners, C*Eridex exhibits qualitative and quantitative synergies by providing mouthfeel and by masking potentially unpleasant characteristics, thus improving the sweetness and flavour quality of end-products.

Beyond its significant taste benefits, C*Eridex is highly stable under acidic and high temperature conditions as well as upon storage. Its crystalline structure and density, non-hygroscopicity and excellent flowability make it an ideal carrier.

Cerestar is a global manufacturer of starch and its derivatives, market leader in Europe and the fifth largest starch producer in the USA.  Cerestar's headquarters are in Paris, while its sales offices and 17 production facilities are located throughout the world. Cerestar's Application Centre Food in Vilvoorde is rated as the best in Europe.
