C*Eridex (Erythritol) Food Approved in Russia

Cerestar has been given approval to market its all-natural, noncaloric bulk sweetener C*Eridex in Russia, after receiving certification from the Russian Ministry of Public Health.  Certification was given on the basis of studies conducted by the Nutrition Institute in Moscow, which reconfirmed the safety of C*Eridex.

This latest approval moves C*Eridex another step closer to being a true global brand, as it is already marketed successfully in Japan, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.

C*Eridex - high purity crystalline erythritol - is an all-natural noncaloric bulk sweetener produced from starch by fermentation. Erythritol is similar to other polyols as it is tooth-friendly and safe for diabetics, but has two additional nutritional advantages: it is noncaloric, and is has an excellent digestive tolerance. Both benefits are due to its unique metabolic behaviour.

C*Eridex is moderately sweet with a significant cooling effect and taste quality close to sucrose. Moreover, it shows quantitative and qualitative synergies when used in combination with intense sweeteners, by improving their taste and mouthfeel.  C*Eridex has a high stability against heat and acid, medium solubility, low hygroscopicity and excellent crystalline properties.  This makes it especially suitable to replace sucrose in applications where crystalline structure is essential - such as in tabletop sweeteners, fondant and coatings.

C*Eridex is also ideal for sugar-free low calorie foods and diet beverages. In sugar-free chewing gum, erythritol provides a softer texture with improved flexibility. Even use levels as low as 10% prolong significantly the shelf life and flexibility of gums, while the strong cooling effect of fine powder enhances the fresh taste. In chocolate, C*Eridex allows up to 30% calorie reduction just by using erythritol instead of sucrose, giving non-hygroscopic chocolate with excellent gloss, texture, melting properties, and a pleasant cooling effect. In low or zero calorie drinks such as tea and coffee, C*Eridex adds body and mouthfeel, and it masks bitterness and astringency.

The fact that C*Eridex is all-natural and that it possesses a number of health benefits makes it an ideal ingredient in functional beverages.  In Japan, one market where C*Eridex is well established, two-thirds of all erythritol is used in beverages with a "healthy" image.
